Donepezil | Side Effects, Dosage, Uses, and More

Donepezil

Donepezil is a prescription drug. It comes in two oral tablet forms: oral tablets and oral disruptive tablets (ODT).
Donepezil oral tablet is available as a brand name drug Aricept. It is also available as a general medicine. Generic drugs usually have lower cost than the brand name version. In some cases, they can not be available in every form or form in the form of a brand name drug.
This drug can be used as part of the combination therapy. This means that you have to take it with other medicines.

Why it is Used

Donepezil is used to treat dementia due to light, moderate, and severe Alzheimer’s disease. This drug is not a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, but it can help to slow down the progress of your symptoms. The symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease will get worse over time even if you take medicines like Donepezil.

How it works

Donepezil is related to a range of medicines called acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. A class of drugs is a group of medications that work in a similar way. These drugs are often used to treat similar conditions.
People with Alzheimer’s disease have a small amount of chemical called acetylcholine in the brain. Low levels of this chemistry can cause dementia, or problems in mental function or daily work. Donepezil works by preventing the breakdown of acetylcholine. It can help reduce dementia symptoms.
