Uses
For the treatment of Parkinson’s disease, Bromocriptine is used alone or with other medications (such as Livodopa). It can improve the ability to move and reduce weakness (shudder), rigidity, slow movement, and instability. It may not be able to reduce the number of episodes (“on-off syndrome”).
Bromocriptine is also used to treat high levels of a fixed hormone made by the body (prolactin). High levels of prolactin can cause problems like unwanted breast milk, missed / stops for periods, difficulty in getting pregnant, decrease in sperm production, and decreased sexual capacity. Bromocriptine can be used to treat tumors which cause high levels of prolactin (prolactin-secreting adenomas). It can help to reduce tumor size. Bromocriptine is not recommended to prevent unwanted breast milk after pregnancy, miscarriage or abortion, due to potential severe side effects (such as high blood pressure, seizure, heart attack, stroke).
Bromocriptine is also used for the treatment of high-level growth hormone (acromegaly).
Bromocriptine is an ergot drug that works by acting like a certain natural substance (dopamine) in the brain. It also prevents the release of some hormones (growth hormone, prolactin). Bromocriptine can reduce the level of hormones, but it does not cure the causes of increased levels.
How To Use Bromocriptine MESYLATE
Take this medicine with your doctor’s prescribed mouth, usually 1 or 2 times daily. Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Due to the treatment of acromegaly, dose growth is also based on the level of hormones. To reduce your risk of side-effects, your doctor may direct you to start this medication on low dose and gradually increase your dose. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully.
Take this medication regularly to get the most benefits from this. To help you remember, take it every day at the same time.
Do not stop this medicine without consulting your doctor. When this drug suddenly stops, some conditions may worsen even more. In addition, you may experience symptoms such as fever, muscle rigidity and delusion. To prevent these symptoms during your treatment with this drug, your doctor may gradually reduce your dose. Side Effects
Nausea, vomiting, dizziness, drowsiness, mildness, fatigue, constipation, or headache can occur. If any of these effects is persistent or worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist immediately.
