Labetalol Oral : Uses, Side Effects, Interactions

Labetalol HCL

COMMON BRAND(S): Normodyne, Trandate
GENERIC NAME(S): Labetalol

Uses

Labetalol is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) with or without other medicines. Reducing hypertension helps in preventing stroke, heart attack and kidney problems.
Labetalol is both an alpha blocker and a beta blocker. It works by blocking the action of some natural chemicals in your body such as epinephrine on the heart and blood vessels. This effect reduces heart rate, blood pressure and pressure on the heart.

Take Labetalol from mouth, usually twice a day or your doctor’s direction. You can take this medicine with or without food, but it is necessary to choose a method and take this medicine with every dose.
Dosage is based on your medical condition and treatment response. To reduce your risk of side effects, your doctor may direct you to start this medication on low dose and gradually increase your dose. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully.
Use Labetalol regularly to get the most benefit. To help you remember, take it every day at the same time.
For the treatment of hypertension, you may take several weeks to get the full benefit of this medicine. It is important to continue taking this medicine even if you feel OK. Most people with high blood pressure do not feel sick.
Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve or if it gets worse (for example, your blood pressure readings are high or increased).

Labetalol can reduce blood flow in your hands and feet, so that they can get cold. Smoking can spoil this effect. Wear warm clothes and avoid using tobacco.
